Christmas CASSEROLE Dinner

Christmas Banquet for the Homeless

December 22, 2006, at Saint Vincent DePaul’s Baltimore, Md

Goal is to feed 200 homeless men on this evening and give each a bag with clothing, toiletries, and snacks to take with them. We need your help with either a monetary donation to put together their bags or with baking a casserole or dessert to feed them.

Menu:

Casseroles: prefer hearty meat dishes such as chicken and broccoli, spaghetti and meatballs, tuna noodle, but they also love mashed potatoes

Everybody loves dessert so cakes/ cookies/ etc are needed as well

Cans of soda/ bottles of water/ juice boxes

Swag / party-favors/ care-package:

Thermals Gloves
Hats
Socks
Scarves
Sweatshirts

Gum Candy
Granola Chocolate
Cookies
Toiletries
Combs Razors
Deodorant
Toothpaste
Toothbrush

Casseroles need to be delivered to Our Lady of the Fields kitchen refrigerator by 2p on the 22nd of December. If frozen and delivered before then—let me know so we can defrost them in time. All other non-perishable items should be dropped at my house in Crofton. Questions/ comments please notify: Gerry at 4104516809/ Scheidhauer@Comcast.Net or Kelly at 4104516465. THANKS!!

When we had our meeting, I think Ed explained that on occasion certain groups call Francine to volunteer to bring food and to serve at St. Vincent's. With the holidays coming up, a few folks have called to volunteer as follows:

Nov. 10th - that's this Friday coming up, i.e. the 2nd Friday. Barbara Urban will be bringing 10 casseroles and salad. So there is no need to push for 14 casseroles for this week. Whatever you get, we'll serve. Or if some folks want to skip this week, that would be okay too.

Nov. 17th - this is the 3rd Friday and usually we have hot dogs but a person has volunteered with 8 casseroles. Since Gerry's folks have a break their 4th Friday because of Thanksgiving Friday, he was going to have some folks make casseroles to go with the hot dogs. Assuming Gerry can recruit at least an additional 6 casseroles, the hot dog lady is being given a break. I think there are about 4 casseroles in the freezer for us. I think it is the freezer in the kitchen. Could someone from your team put these in the refrig on Tues or Wed to defrost by Friday?

Dec 1 - this is the 1st Friday. A sorority will be providing the complete dinner. We can supplement with a few casseroles - 6 would probably be sufficient.

I also have heard from a Why Catholic groupothing definite yet. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for all the help, the casseroles are greatly appreciated.

God Bless
Susan

Yes Gerry for Nov 17th we had a lot of food but as usual
it was all given away. Some were very interesting!!

This past Friday was great - we served about 180 a
Thanksgiving Feast - great food and a good portion for
all.
Hope you had a nice holiday.

Candy is good, so is soda - coke or pepsi is what they
like - some sprite too

They love mashed potatoes and gravey

Really - everything is a treat, they eat what we have.

Sure - that would be great for you to come to St. Vincent's too. Do you
want to deliver the casseroles too? Do you need directions to St.
Vincent's?

Gerry,

My daughter attends St. Peter the Rock Homeschool Tutorial Highschool with about 40 other teens. I'll approach the group Thursday and ask about setting up a collection box (the students only meet on Tues/Thurs). How about the following?

Backpacks
Toothbrushes/Toothpaste
Hairbrushes/Combs
Washcloths
Handtowels

Socks - athletic or winter, large & x-large men sizes
Blankets - could you specify type or size, please
Warm hats - I'm thinking those wool knit caps

Canned Sodas
Bottled juices (10-12 oz sizes)
Individually wrapped candy
Granola or candy bars

How about Christmas Cards? A personal message signed with first name only. It could contain a prayer card or picture? Would we have to have a minimum number of cards collected to make this fair - If so, how many would be a good guess. Maybe I can enlist the help of some of the Faith Formation classes by dropping off cards and asking the kids to draw pictures and sign first name only. I think our homeschool co-op which meets at OLF would help out, too (that's another 50 kids/cards). Just a thought.

Items would all be collected no later than Dec 15th.

Whadyathink?

Dear Gerry,
Yes, we need all the things you mentioned: gloves/ thermal underwear/ back
packs/ sweatshirts plus socks and hooded sweatshirts. We get mostly men -
an average of 160 per week. There are a few women and occasionally
children.
Thanks,
Ed

Go for it, Gerry. God bless you.

Hello

I hope I am not stepping on anybody's toes. Just getting a bunch of positive responses and people very willing to help so kind of took off on its own.

We'll see what happens but excited at least the goal being to feed the homeless and hopefully have a back pack filled with stuff for each on the 4th friday

Hi Gerry,
I would go for quantity so that everybody gets something. As for people coming to help - the more the merrier.

Hello

Is it more important for quantity or quality? Should I shoot for say 200 bags with not as much in or say 100 full?

I also am getting a bunch of requests for some families to join us on the 22nd to help serve/ help?

Gerry - We spoke briefly Sat morning about the warmth tree and your efforts to get together back packs for the folks downtown. To me these 2 efforts are one in the same. I think I failed to properly communicate what I was trying to say. It seems to me to be a good idea for you to continue to recruit volunteers to donate back packs and items to go in them. The warmth tree can be the focal point or drop off point of the results of your efforts. Ed gathers all the items dropped off at the tree and sorts through them. What he can bring downtown he does and what can be given to winter relief is taken care of too. Perhaps all the back packs and items for them, Ed could direct your way. Friday afternoon, Dec 22, we could get a few volunteers to come to the kitchen area and put socks, etc. into the packs to bring downtown. If we promote this at Sunday Mass, Ed could ask Fr. Gene, I'm sure we would probably get enough donated. If not, perhaps we could use some of the donated money to purchase what we need - Ed? Or maybe this is too ambitious and not an appropriate use of the funds. Or if we could get 150+ back packs, we could pass them out at the food line instead of plastic bags? And put socks, etc. in them up town? One of Jomary's women's groups is donating 150 socks by the way.

Gerry - On Dec 22 I get off work early and so I can come help you load the casseroles and show you to up town.

Peace,
Susan

Gerry - How are you paying for all this merchandise? Are you collecting from the parishioners? Don't you think we can get the parishioners to donate all the items needed?

Check with Ed - but I think back packs are needed. A canvas bag - less expensive just to use the plastic bags if they still need to carry.

The church seems to be collecting bigger ticket items which is why i went for the smaller items.

Wasnt giving all this too much thought other than trying to do something a little extra for the 4th friday casserole. I received better than expected responses and decided to run with it. I am assuming/ praying it all works out in the end

Trying to avoid duplication of effort

I do a lot of business on-line and was figuring I could buy more wholesale/ bulk than if each individual could buy. A pair of thermals at the store may run what $10 or more. I have a deal to buy 50 sets for some $200 or so. Or I have a deal for 200 canvas tote bags for $200. I havent put a pencil to it but for about $10 I could fill a backpack.

The big tickets items are the backpacks/ sweatshirts/ thermals/ blankets. But by collecting money I can get the rest.

In negotiation over this weekend with a couple of wholesalers to see what I can get--aiming for 200 of each item.

I have no idea how it will all turn out and figuring/ praying that it all will.

Sorry about my email earlier today. It was from work and

Dear Gerry,
I suggest that you give all checks that are made out to Our Lady of The Fields to Nancy, the Parish manager. She will then write a check to you and you can use the money to pay for the things you are buying. That way I am not in the middle, although if you need assistance I'm glad to help. It's a good idea to keep records of the money you spend and the money you receive.
Thanks,
Ed
