Animal Interiors Soccer Team

I think last night a tie would have been deserved although if we played again we could beat this team.

Yes, we got lucky they had a few shots off target/ hit the wood works/ they also seemed to be a mixture of at least 2 teams and heard a bunch of bickering. Also, not a good team to lose too.

I think we more beat ourselves. Game started early/ guys getting there late. they scored an easy goal to begin game with. We had a bunch of unforced errors as well

Year of a Million Dreams

Where are the YOAMD Desserts?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Loved the Millenium desserts, also the Happiest Celebration on Earth desserts--but where are the Year of a Million Dreams desserts? Saw some special wines and stuff on the menus but no cool desserts. I still like the Millenium white chocolate mousse inside a white chocolate mold of Spaceship Earth I had in Italy a few years back. This time we had tables at: Jiko's, Coral Reef, China, and GF Cafe and other than the chocolate lava cake dessert at CR--no special desserts--actually never ordered desserts from Jiko's or China.

Communion

There was always an elephant in the room during the Communion debate.

BY the Editors

November 26-December 2, 2006 Issue

Posted 11/22/06 at 8:00 AM

There was always an elephant in the room during the Communion debate.

In debates about politicians receiving Communion, one big fat fact remained unacknowledged.

Catholics asked: Why should the lawmakers who enact draconian pro-abortion laws receive Communion? But they should have asked: Why are so many others receiving Communion when they shouldn’t?

With their new document, “Happy Are Those Who Are Called to His Supper:” On Preparing to Receive Christ Worthily in the Eucharist,” the bishops are pointing dramatically at the elephant in the Communion line.

The document reminds us not just that Communion is for Catholics only, but for Catholics who:

— Went to confession in the past year, at least, or more often if they committed a serious sin.

— Fasted for an hour first “refraining from food and drink (except for water and medicines) for at least one hour prior to receiving Holy Communion.”

— Are wearing “modest and tasteful dress” — “clothes that reflect our reverence for God and that manifest our respect for the dignity of the liturgy and for one another.”

— Are in a recollected and prayerful state of mind. The statement even spells out some common serious sins. These are sins that constitute grave matter. When we do them deliberately and with knowledge of their sinfulness, they put us in a state of mortal sin.

— Abortion and euthanasia. “Committing murder, including abortion and euthanasia, harboring deliberate hatred of others.”

— Any extra-marital sex. “Engaging in sexual activity outside the bonds of a valid marriage.”

— Theft, including “serious fraud, or other immoral business practices.”

— Slander, Hatred and Envy. “Speaking maliciously or slandering people in a way that seriously undermines their good name. … Harboring deliberate hatred of others. … Engaging in envy that leads one to wish grave harm to someone else.”

— Pornography. “Producing, marketing, or indulging in pornography.”

This document is a robust answer to what Pope John Paul II asked for in his 2001 apostolic letter Novo Millennio Ineunte (At the Beginning of the New Millennium). He asked for bishops to have “courage, confidence and creativity” in re-establishing the sacrament of confession in their dioceses.

In 2002, when the Church was rocked with scandals, John Paul saw what the real crisis was: Catholics were allowing themselves to fall into a state of sin, weren’t going to confession and were, often enough, receiving Communion anyway.

What’s the big deal with that? When priests and their flocks no longer care about sin, it’s only a matter of time before they will begin sinning in ways that shock us.

John Paul wrote a Holy Thursday letter to priests in 2002 in which he said three times that people in a state of sin should not receive Communion without going to confession first. In another passage he pleaded:

“My dear brothers in the priesthood … I feel a pressing need to urge you, as I did last year, to rediscover for yourselves and to help others to rediscover the beauty of the sacrament of reconciliation.

“In recent decades and for a variety of reasons the sacrament has passed through a crisis. More than once I have drawn attention to this fact, even making it the theme of a gathering of the synod of bishops.”

That same year, on the feast of Divine Mercy, he put his plea for more confession, and proper confession, into an apostolic letter all its own, giving it an especially urgent motu proprio status.

Then, in his last encyclical, Ecclesia de Eucharistia, he made this almost formal declaration:

“I therefore desire to reaffirm that in the Church there remains in force, now and in the future, the rule by which the Council of Trent gave concrete expression to the Apostle Paul’s stern warning when it affirmed that, in order to receive the Eucharist in a worthy manner, one must first confess one’s sins, when one is aware of mortal sin.”

Catholics should bring this new U.S. bishops document (find it at USCCB.org) to the attention of their pastors and begin promoting it. It’s the best way to defeat the Church’s biggest scandal: the loss of the sense of sin.

Communion and Sinners

Serious sin a bar to receiving Communion, bishops say in new document
By Nancy Frazier O'Brien Catholic News Service BALTIMORE (CNS) -- Emphasizing that they were addressing all Catholics, and not just politicians or any other group, the U.S. bishops Nov. 14 voted in favor of a document calling on those in a state of serious sin to refrain from receiving Communion. The vote was 201-24, with two abstentions.
An effort to amend the document to specifically name politicians as among those who need to examine their consciences before receiving the Eucharist failed on a voice vote.
Titled "'Happy Are Those Who Are Called to His Supper': On Preparing to Receive Christ Worthily in the Eucharist," the document says that a Catholic who "knowingly and obstinately" rejects "the defined doctrines of the church" or repudiates "definitive teaching on moral issues" would not be in communion with the church and therefore should not receive Communion.
"All kinds of people don't understand their responsibilities when going to the Eucharist," said Bishop Arthur J. Serratelli of Paterson, N.J., chairman of the U.S. bishops' Committee on Doctrine. His committee prepared the document following a request in November 2004 by Archbishop John J. Myers of Newark, N.J., for a statement on how Catholics should prepare to receive the Eucharist.
Archbishop Myers' request came after a presidential campaign in which some bishops had criticized the Democratic candidate, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, and said he and other Catholic politicians who supported abortion should be refused Communion under canon law.
But a footnote to the document says that it is not intended "to provide specific guidelines" to the provision in canon law that says that Catholics "obstinately persevering in manifest grave sin" should not be allowed to receive Communion.
In comments to the bishops before the Nov. 14 debate and vote, Bishop Serratelli said the document was intended as a positive message of encouragement to U.S. Catholics.
"To be a Catholic is a challenge and to be a Catholic is to adhere to the church's teachings as handed down by Christ," he said.
The document said all Catholics "should strive to receive holy Communion regularly, gratefully and worthily."
"We may find ourselves in situations, however, where an examination of conscience before God reveals to us that we should refrain from partaking of the body and blood of Christ," the bishops said.
But among the 79 amendments to the document was a warning that everyone "should be cautious when making judgments about whether or not someone else should receive holy Communion."
"In order to receive holy Communion we must be in communion with God and with the church," the document says. "If we are no longer in a state of grace because of mortal sin, we are seriously obliged to refrain from receiving holy Communion until we are reconciled with God and the church."
Among examples of such sin, the document cites "committing murder, including abortion and euthanasia; harboring deliberate hatred of others; (and) sexual abuse of a minor or vulnerable adult, or physical or verbal abuse of others that causes grave physical or psychological harm."
Other "serious violations of the law of love of God and of neighbor" listed in the document included swearing a false oath, missing Mass on Sundays or holy days without a serious reason, "acting in serious disobedience against proper authority," sexual activity "outside the bonds of a valid marriage," stealing, slander or involvement with pornography.
The document criticized those who "give selective assent to the teachings of the church."
But Catholics who have "honest doubt and confusion" about some church teachings "are welcome to partake of holy Communion, as long as they are prayerfully and honestly striving to understand the truth of what the church professes and are taking appropriate steps to resolve their confusion and doubt," the document says.
"If a Catholic in his or her personal or professional life were knowingly and obstinately either to reject or to doubt the defined doctrines of the church or her definitive teaching on moral issues, however, he or she would seriously diminish his or her communion with the church," it added. "Reception of holy Communion in such a situation would not accord with the nature of the eucharistic celebration, so he or she should refrain."
If a person who "is publicly known to have committed serious sin or to have rejected definitive church teaching and is not yet reconciled with the church" receives Communion, it "is likely to cause scandal for others," giving "further reason" for the person to refrain, the bishops said.
The document says Catholics should get ready to receive Communion through both "remote preparation" -- prayer, Scripture reading, frequent confession and other steps -- and "proximate preparation."
The bishops said elements of proximate preparation include maintaining "reverent silence" before Mass begins; refraining from food and drink for an hour before receiving Communion; dressing modestly at Mass; listening attentively to the Scripture readings and homily; and actively participating in the Mass "with our whole hearts and minds and bodies."
The bishops also urged Catholics to make "a reverent bow of the head" before receiving Communion.
"Putting these simple actions into practice will help us to enter more profoundly into the eucharistic celebration, receive holy Communion more worthily, and thus obtain more fully the grace of communion with the risen lord Jesus and with one another," the document says.
It also includes two appendices explaining church teaching on when non-Catholics can receive Communion in a Catholic church and when Catholics are permitted to take Communion at a non-Catholic service.
"When participating as guests in worship services in other Christian communities, Catholics are encouraged to join the community in the shared responses and in the singing of hymns," the document says. "It is not permitted, however, for Catholics to receive communion in other Christian ecclesial communities."
The document also reminds Catholics who join in non-Catholic services on a Sunday that "the obligation to participate in a Catholic Mass still remains."
Non-Catholics are permitted to receive Communion in a Catholic church only if they belong to churches in full communion with the Catholic Church or in cases of "grave necessity" when ministers of their own faith are not available and certain other conditions are met, the appendix says.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at Mass

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at Mass
General PrinciplesIn every celebration of the Eucharist, there should be a sufficient number of ministers of Holy Communion so that it may be distributed in a reverent and orderly manner. Bishops, priests and deacons distribute Holy Communion in virtue of their office as ordinary ministers of the Body and Blood of the Lord. (1)When the size of the congregation or the incapacity of the bishop, priest, or deacon requires it, the celebrant may be assisted by other bishops, priests, or deacons. If such ordinary ministers of Holy Communion are not present, "the priest may call upon extraordinary ministers to assist him, i.e., duly instituted acolytes or even other faithful who have been deputed for this purpose. In case of necessity, the priest may also depute suitable faithful for this single occasion (GIRM 162)." Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should receive sufficient spiritual, theological, and practical preparation to fulfill their role with knowledge and reverence. In all matters they should follow the guidance of the diocesan bishop (Norms for the Distribution and Reception of Holy Communion Under Both Kinds for the Dioceses of the United States of America, NDRHC, no. 28). When recourse is had to Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, especially in the distribution of Holy Communion under both kinds, their number should not be increased beyond what is required for the orderly and reverent distribution of the Body and Blood of the Lord. In all matters such Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should follow the guidance of the diocesan bishop (IBID).All ministers of Holy Communion should show the greatest reverence for the Most Holy Eucharist by their demeanor, their attire, and the manner in which they handle the consecrated bread or wine. Should there be any mishap--as when, for example, the consecrated wine is spilled from the chalice--then the affected "area . . . should be washed and the water poured into the sacrarium [GIRM, 280]." (NDRHC, 29).Liturgy of the Eucharist:
As the Agnus Dei or Lamb of God is begun, the bishop or priest alone, or with the assistance of the deacon, and if necessary of concelebrating priests, breaks the eucharistic bread.
As the Agnus Dei or Lamb of God is begun, the Bishop or priest alone, or with the assistance of the deacon, and if necessary of concelebrating priests, breaks the eucharistic bread. Other empty ciboria or patens are then brought to the altar is this is necessary. The deacon or priest places the consecrated bread in several ciboria or patens, if necessary, as required for the distribution of Holy Communion. If it is not possible to accomplish this distribution in a reasonable time, the celebrant may call upon the assistance of other deacons or concelebrating priests.
If extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are required by patoral need, they should not approach the altar before the priest has received Communion. After the priest has concluded his own Communion, he distributes Communion to the extraordinary ministers, assisted by the deacon, and then hands the sacred vessels to them for distribution of Holy Communion to the people.
All receive Holy Communion in the manner described by the General Instruction to the Roman Missal, whether priest concelebrants (cf. GIRM, nos. 159, 242, 243, 246), deacons (cf. GIRM, nos. 182, 244, 246), or Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (cf. GIRM, no. 284). Neither deacons nor lay ministers may ever receive Holy Communion in the manner of a concelebrating priest. The practice of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion waiting to receive Holy Communion until after the distribution of Holy Communion is not in accord with liturgical law. (NDRHC, 39; GIRM, 160).
After all Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion have received the Eucharist, the bishop or priest celebrant reverently hands vessels containing the Body or the Blood of the Lord to the deacons or extraordinary ministers who will assist with the distribution of Holy Communion. The deacon may assist the priest in handing the vessels containing the Body and Blood of the Lord to the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. (NDRHC, 40).
The proper and only permissible form for distributing Holy Communion is to offer the consecrated bread by saying, "The Body of Christ" and to offer the consecrated wine by saying, "The Blood of Christ." No other words or names should be added; and the formula should not be edited in any way. (Cf. GIRM, 161; 284-287).
If the Eucharistic bread or some particle of it falls, it should be picked up reverently by the minister. The consecrated bread may be consumed or completely dissolved in water before being poured down the sacrarium.
Should there be any mishap, for example, if the consecrated wine is spilled from the chalice, the area should be washed and the water poured into the sacrarium.
In those instances when there remains more consecrated wine than was necessary, if needs dictate, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion may consume what remains of the Precious Blood from their cup of distribution with the permission of the diocesan bishop. The sacred vessles are to be purified by the priest, the deacon or an instituted acolyte. The amount of wine to be consecrated should be carefully measured before the celebration so that none remains afterward. It is strictly forbidden to pour the Precious Blood into the ground or into the sacrarium. (NDRHC, 51-55).
Similarly, "consecrated hosts are to be reserved in a ciborium or vessel in sufficient quantity for the needs of the faithful; they are to be frequently renewed and the old hosts properly consumed" (Code of Canon Law, no. 939). Burying hosts or consecrated Eucharistic bread is strictly forbidden.Notes

Gerry
Manyof the casseroles from this past Fri did not get baked so I put them in the freezer this morning with the others we have. There are 10 - 12 in the freezer already for next week. Francine and John Hoppa are going to bake them next Friday and the hot dog lady is being given a break. If you could still ask some one in your group to take the casseroles out of the freezer by Wednesday so they have a few days to defrost in the refrig that would be terrific. If you can't find anyone, let Francine know and she will take care of it.

Marie came to Balto last night to help serve. She is a 1st Friday casserole person but she is going to switch to the 2nd Friday to give Ann help in getting the casseroles baked.

Aunts and Uncle's WDW DEC 2006 trip Plans

Hi All,

This message comes to you from your friendly travel agent in Hilton Head! Some updates on our upcoming trip.

Firstly, We have cracked the waitlist on one of the two bedroom villas at Old Key West from December 3-6. this means that we all will stay at Caribbean Beach the night of Dec 2 and some of us will move over to Old Key West on Sunday after church. The two bedrroms sleep eight actually, but I know you all would like your own rooms. They have a king sized bedroom and a secondbedroom with two queen sized beds. My thinking right now would be that Jack and I (as king and queen!) would take the king room, and Aileen and Bill take the queens room. Jerry, you perhaps could take the queen sofa bed. As you know, Old Key West villas are huge and very accomodating. The reason I think it would be better for Aileen and Bill to be there is because they have such a late flight out on Tuesday, they could hang around, either at a park, or at the villa till they have to leave for the airport. You would get magical express to the Caribbean, and back from Old Key West. Ginny and Tom, sorry to leave you at the Caribbean, but we will compensate you for your extra expenses somehow!!! Really!
Of course, this will be changed if the other two bedroom clears and we can all be at Old Key West. We;ll keep our fingers crossed. My friend at Disney Member Services says this has turned out to be one of the busiest weeks at Disney! All the hotels are sold out!

If you all want to change the above around let me know. We would have to cancel any rooms at Caribbean Beach at least one week earlier or so. I havent changed those reservations as yet.

Secondly, I confirmed a dinner package on Sunday night, Dec. 3 at Germany in Epcot and this includes seats at the Christmas Candlelight show. We have reservations for the 6:45 show which means our dinner reservations are at 3:30 to give us time to eat and walk over to America. I am holding it on my credit card, but we dont pay until that evening at the restaurant. I am so excited about this - should be fun. We have never actually eaten at Germany so it will be a first for us. We will have time to walk around Epcot both before dinner and before the Illuminations show at 9:00. Hope you all like this.

Thirdly, other schedules - I think Monday will be total park day and I'm sure you all have different directions you would like to go. There is so much to see and do of course. There is a new ride in Animal Kingdom - Mt Everest - if you are a roller-coaster fanatic! Karen and family did it and loved it. Also Animal Kingdom has the Lion King show, and also a new show on Nemo should be open by then.

We love MGM as the shows are always good. Anybody for Tower of Terror, or Rock and Rollercoaster? Not us. But the Muppets, Indiana Jones, Great Movie Ride, and several good restaurants.

And of course, Magic Kingdom. - Must see Main Street decorated for Christmas. And Its a Small World! etc.

I guess, Saturday, our first day, might be spent at a park, or if the weather is nice, hanging around the pool at Caribbean Beach. Maybe Downtown Disney. Bill and Aileen are in late and we could meet up with them later.

As you remember, we'll go in on my passes together at one of the parks we pick and then everyone can spread out and do their own thing. We may meet for dinner Monday night and we can decide that later. Depends on where we all are ending up.

One more thing - Christmas shopping! I could spend the whole time doing that!! We can use my 40 percent discount as long as I make the purchase for you and you pay me back. Not too many exclusions on this discount, but some, like new DVD's etc. I also found out that we can take guests this year to our Product Control area, which is a huge Disney flea market where everything is marked way down - its like the land of misfit toys! But they have clothes, toys, decorations etc. We may have to squeeze that in somehow if you want.

I know I'll think of something else, and will get back to you as things come up.

Any questions, please let me know.

Jerry - I know you mentioned driving here first and going down with us. Not sure if that will work and I will let you know our plans. We want to see Selena and John and Katie while we are in Florida and may head down there before Disney or after Disney. They may even come up, so I will let you know. You still could use our house as an overnight - we usually leave one door open for Karen to check on things! dont tell anyone!

Love to all. Later ......Carole and Jack

REMEMBER to make a wish before you read the prayer. That's all you have to do. There is nothing attached. Just send this to eleven people and let me know what happens on the fourth day. Lemon Ade prevents Kidney Stones

Prevent kidney stones With Lemonade? If life gives you lemons, make lemonade. But what if life gives you kidney stones? For most people, a drug called potassium citrate is prescribed, but for those who can't tolerate potassium citrate's side effects or are allergic to certain medications, the results of a small study published at the American Urological Association's annual meeting indicate that lemonade may work just as well.Kidney stones develop when minerals in the urine crystallize and build up inside the kidney. In most people, urine contains a chemical called citrate, which breaks down the minerals and prevents the stones from forming. In this study, researchers followed 12 people who suffered from hypocitrauria, a condition that causes a person to produce low levels of urinary citrate. Patients in the group drank lemonade made from 120 milliliters of lemon juice mixed with 2 liters of water throughout the day; small amounts of sugar or sugar substitute were added for taste. Results showed that 11 of the 12 patients had increased urinary citrate levels during lemonade therapy. The kidney stones of the people taking lemonade therapy also decreased in size and number during the course of treatment. While lemonade may help reduce the incidence of kidney stones, it's only part of a larger program. Lowering the amount of salt in the diet, eating smaller portions of red meat, and increasing fluid intake can all help slow the formation of existing stones and prevent new ones from developing. Catholics Cant be Pro-Choice

issues Abortion 107 - DOCS
► ALL urges Catholic bishops to uphold faith
As the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops begins its semi-annual meeting in Baltimore today, American Life League is imploring the bishops to tackle the problem of pro-abortion Catholic politicians by making a definitive statement that such individuals should not be permitted to receive Holy Communion.
American Life League is featuring full-page ads in USA Today and The Washington Times that directly address the scandal created by openly pro-abortion Catholics. “This ad is aimed at reminding the bishops of their obligation to enforce Canon Law 915,” said American Life League president Judie Brown. “We pray that the bishops will bring an end to the scandal created by Catholics who publicly support abortion and then receive Holy Communion.”
The ad references Canon 915 of the Church’s Code of Canon Law, which states in part, “Those who...obstinately persist in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to Communion.”
“We must do all we can to help education confused souls in order to bring an end to heinous practice of abortion," said Mrs. Brown. "This is precisely why we call upon the bishops – the Shepherds of the Church – to defend Christ in Holy Eucharist by denying His body and blood to those public figures who condone the crime of abortion. Permitting pro-abortion Catholics in public life to receive Holy Communion sends mixed signals about what the Catholic Church teaches. In fact, failure to make it clear that support for abortion disqualifies a Catholic from receiving Communion might even suggest to confused Catholics that they need not believe the unbending, unchanging truth that every abortion kills a living human being created in the image and likeness of God.”

Christmas or X-Mas

Surprised to read some of these comments on this Disney-site. Just like the results from Tuesday's election, how many referring to Christmas as xmas call themselves Catholics --were the same voting for some of the people elected or for or against Catholic amendments? I guess some of these folks dont feel they have any consquences any longer. I guess also it is part of the 'dumming-down' of at least US culture. Any Keep Christ in Christmas and remember Jesus is the reason for the Season:

X-mas as I celebrate Christ in my life everyday in my own way.

"X" is a symbol for Christ. Check out the paraments, the altars, the pulpits and lecterns in Roman Catholic, Lutheran and Anglican/Episcopalian churches. One will see "X" a whole lot of times. It means Christ -- taken from the first letter of the word in the original Greek. Often you might see "X" & "P" superimposed on each other -- the Chi Rho -- meaning Christ the King.It isn't censoring anything -- so have a Merry Xmas, whether you are a Xian or not.

It's a shame that you don't think that X died for your sins, because I know X died for mine. When I was baptized the pastor made the sign of the "X" on my forehead as an eternal reminder of X's claim on my life. It's the same mark I place upon the foreheads of those I baptize as a Lutheran pastor. We do celebrate X's birth on Xmas Day, even if that wasn't the actual day that X was born -- and there is little or no evidence from the early Xian Church to suggest that the date was chosen in order to supplant the pagan festival of Saturnalia.

I'm sort of fond of Mythmas. I celebrate a winter holiday, with a tree and Santa.

HOW do assumingly intelligent adults still have a problem with XMas - IT MEANS THE SAME THING!!!!!!! I use them interchangably - there is no difference. And believe me, I'm one of the most religious people you'd meet.

I use both.. Christmas or Xmas... just like Birthday or Bday. I don't think there is any right or wrong in this.

I use it interchangably, since I am a non-Christian. Besides, Christmas isn't nearly as fun as Festivus! Now where's my Festivus Pole?:look:TOV

Xmas, but I'm not Xian, so maybe it doesn't count. (even when I was, it didn't bother me)

Who cares...I can NOT fathom how this is a big deal to people. It is an abbriviation. A short cut a what ever. Every year on the Dis we go through this and every year we get the 'people are taking the Christ out of Christmas' blah blah blah. No really they aren't...it isn't that malicous or even that thoughtout. It is laziness. It is typing 4 letters instead of 9. It REALLY IS that simple. So I'm firmly in the Xmas camp when typing on a message board. I'm a lazy typest!

Merry $mas and Happy Holidays. $ has been the reason for the season for decades now.

I'm tired of Christians trying to force themselves down everyone's throat. I've always been a very religous person. I used be a "bible quizzer" and all that stuff, but I've never felt the need to go around making other people feel silly for saying things like "Xmas" or "The Holiday Season". I mean, to me Holiday Season is the best term, being as we're not JUST celebrating Christ's birth, but a whole plethora of other cultural Holidays.

I prefer X-MESS but that's just me

Trump Condo-Hotel Sells Out for $700M

Trump Hawaii condos sell out for $700M
By BRIAN CHARLTON, Associated Press Writer Fri Nov 10, 9:36 PM ET
HONOLULU - Celebrities and investors forked over $700 million in just a few hours to buy up more than 460 suites in Donald Trump's luxury hotel-condominium project in Waikiki.

Sales contracts were signed and deposits put down Thursday for 464 hotel suites at the Trump International Hotel and Tower Waikiki Beach Walk, developers said. The sellout forced the cancellation of a planned second day of sales.
Developers said the sales set a record for the amount of residential property, both in dollar value and unit volume, sold in one development on a single day. The previous record was set in December 2005 when Vancouver-based Intrawest Corp. sold 318 suites in the first phase of a Maui resort for $425 million, according to the Los Angeles-based developer Irongate.
Trump featured the development on his TV reality series, "The Apprentice." The Trump sale attracted celebrities including entertainer Don Ho, NBA players, and pro golfers, along with a Japanese rap star and baseball player, said Jason Grosfeld, co-founder of Irongate.
He would not identify the other investors by name.
"I would have bought out the entire 23rd floor, but someone beat me to it," Ho, who purchased two one-bedroom units, told the Honolulu Star Bulletin.
The average price for a suite was $1.5 million, a 500-square-foot studio for about $400,000, and a three-bedroom penthouse for more than $9 million, developers said.
The 38-story tower will include a library, wine cellar, lobby bar, cafe, fitness center, spa, among other amenities. Construction is scheduled to begin in December and to be completed in mid-2009.

Is it enough to be Catholic?

Since the election and thereafter reading posts here and elsewhere as well as having discussions, etc.: Is it enough just to be Catholic?

Some people i speak with are happy that some of these politicians whom won on Tuesday are Catholic. Here in Md we have a new 'Catholic' governor as well as a new 'Catholic' Speaker of the House (Pelosi). There haev been articles on both Pelosi and O'Malley in at least the Post, how they have been brought up Catholic/ Catholic schools, etc. My dad emailed me saying we should be happy we have 'good Catholics' in these positions. Can we be happy that we have at least this? Or labelling one-self a Catholic is not enough any longer? Are they maintaining at least the minumum the Church requires? If so, if pro-Choice/ anti-Life and an accessory to other people's sins by doing so, especially they are in a position of authority--makes all worse.Yes, id think good they are Catholic but not sure good examples of how God wants us to live as Catholics.

Gerry

But I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is a war against the child - a direct killing of the innocent child - murder by the mother herself. And if we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching the people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want. That is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion.Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Best Buy: bans Marry Christmas

Please help us get this information into the hands of as many people as possible by forwarding it to your entire email list of family and friends.
Best Buy Bans Use of Merry Christmas In Advertising

Best Buy has announced they will be using "Happy Holidays" this coming Christmas shopping season, and they will not be using "Merry Christmas."
Dawn Bryant, a spokeswoman at Best Buy Co. Inc., says their advertising will not be using the term "Merry Christmas." "We are going to continue to use the term holiday because there are several holidays throughout that time period, and we certainly need to be respectful of all of them," Bryant said. Click here for reference article.
While many other retailers have decided to return to the traditional "Merry Christmas", Best Buy will not be among them. Best Buy considers the use of "Merry Christmas" to be disrespectful.
But while Best Buy, the largest consumer electronics company in the nation, will not be mentioning Christmas, they sure do want the shopping dollars from those who remember the Reason for the season.
Take Action
Send an e-mail to Best Buy telling them of your disappointment at their decision to ban Christmas in their advertising. (You may receive an auto-reply. If so, that is ok. Don't worry about it, your e-mail has been received.)
Forward this to your friends and family so they can learn of Best Buy's decision.
Send your e-mail to Best Buy If you think our efforts are worthy, would you please support us with a small gift? Thank you for caring enough to get involved.

Wal Mart: Keep Christ in Christmas

Wal-Mart opts for ‘Christmas’ marketing
It won't be 'happy holidays' this year; it will be 'Merry Christmas'
The Associated Press

BENTONVILLE, Ark. - It is beginning to look a lot more like Christmas at Wal-Mart.
This holiday season, Wal-Mart isn’t trumpeting big bargains only. It’s also bringing “Christmas” back into its marketing, after several years of playing down the term.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc.’s Christmas cheer seems to be a hot trend this season as several other retailers including Kohl’s Corp. and Macy’s, a division of Federated Department Stores Inc., are also stepping up their Christmas marketing. The moves respond to mounting criticism from religious groups that staged boycotts against Wal-Mart and other merchants after they eliminated or de-emphasized “Christmas” in their advertising.
“We learned a lesson from that. Merry Christmas is now part of the vocabulary here at Wal-Mart,” said Linda Blakley, a Wal-Mart spokeswoman.
Wal-Mart said Thursday that it will launch its first Christmas-specific TV ad in several years, feature Christmas shops, previously called Holiday Shops, and increase the number of seasonal merchandise labeled “Christmas” instead of “holiday” by 60 percent.
Macy’s is adding Christmas signage in all of its department stores and Kohl’s is playing up Christmas this year in its TV, print and radio advertising, according to Vicki Shamion, a Kohl’s spokeswoman.
Still, not everyone is following suit.
“We are going to continue to use the term holiday because there are several holidays throughout that time period, and we certainly need to be respectful of all of them,” said Dawn Bryant, a spokeswoman at Best Buy Co. Inc., whose advertising omits any reference to Christmas.

OLF CASSEROLE

When we had our meeting, I think Ed explained that on occasion certain groups call Francine to volunteer to bring food and to serve at St. Vincent's. With the holidays coming up, a few folks have called to volunteer as follows:

Nov. 10th - that's this Friday coming up, i.e. the 2nd Friday. Barbara Urban will be bringing 10 casseroles and salad. So there is no need to push for 14 casseroles for this week. Whatever you get, we'll serve. Or if some folks want to skip this week, that would be okay too.

Nov. 17th - this is the 3rd Friday and usually we have hot dogs but a person has volunteered with 8 casseroles. Since Gerry's folks have a break their 4th Friday because of Thanksgiving Friday, he was going to have some folks make casseroles to go with the hot dogs. Assuming Gerry can recruit at least an additional 6 casseroles, the hot dog lady is being given a break. I think there are about 4 casseroles in the freezer for us. I think it is the freezer in the kitchen. Could someone from your team put these in the refrig on Tues or Wed to defrost by Friday?

Dec 1 - this is the 1st Friday. A sorority will be providing the complete dinner. We can supplement with a few casseroles - 6 would probably be sufficient.

I also have heard from a Why Catholic groupothing definite yet. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for all the help, the casseroles are greatly appreciated.

God Bless
Susan

Take Back the Seasons

section39953
Nailing Christ to the Cross
By Steve Kellmeyer
It wasn't a coincidence. When Martin Luther decided to nail his Ninety-FiveTheses to the door of Wittenburg Castle Church, he chose Halloween to do it.Selling the SeasonThis Augustinian monk held fiercely to many grievous doctrinal errors, buthe did understand one thing: the liturgical year of the Catholic Church. The liturgical year is meant to do two things at once: through it, we castour eyes back towards Christ's life on earth and through it wesimultaneously cast our eyes forward through the long history of mankind, ahistory which will be crowned in the Parousia, the Second Coming of Christ.Luther understood this. That's why he really had no choice. His attack onindulgences had to take place on All Hallow's Eve. We moderns don't realizethe significance of the day because our seasons are confused. For instance, we all know that America celebrates New Year's Day on thewrong day. The new year doesn't begin January 1st, it begins on the firstSunday of Advent. Advent, of course, is the season during which we meditateon man's sinfulness and prepare for Christmas. At least, we used to.Up until World War II, every Christian treated Advent in that way.Stockings, ornaments, even Christmas trees were not erected in any houseuntil Christmas Eve. Advent was a time of preparation and repentance. DuringAdvent, everyone meditated on the world's wickedness prior to God come inthe flesh (past), and prepared themselves for the Last Day, when God comesas Judge (future). For centuries, Christmas was at once both a reminder ofthe Incarnation, the First Coming, and a reminder of Dooms-Day, JudgementDay, the Second Coming. That's why Christmas gifts were exchanged only during Christmas season(which doesn't start until Christmas Eve). The exchange of gifts not onlyrecalled the gifts of the magi to the Christ child (past), they alsoreminded us of the wonderful exchange of Persons we enter into in Heavenafter Judgement Day (future).World War II changed all that. Because it took six weeks to transportanything by ship over the ocean, Americans were told to buy their Christmasgifts for their sons overseas by Thanksgiving, or their sons would notreceive those gifts during Christmas season. American businesses liked theextra income generated by the much longer selling season six weeks beatstwelve days hands down. section39954Getting Things in OrderSixty years of advertising broke two millenia of Christian practice.Halloween has now become the closest thing we have to an Advent season.Advent is now a four-week long Christmas season, and Christmas season is nowPurgatory. The season during which we are supposed to celebrate our life inheaven with the Christ child is now the time we pay all the bills. In Luther's time, everything was still in its proper order: Death,Purgatory, Judgement Day. Death and Purgatory were recalled first throughthe commemoration of All Saints' Day, emphasizing those who died and wentstraight to heaven, and All Souls' Day, emphasizing those who died and stillhad more purification ahead of them. Purgatory, of course, is not someplace any of us are supposed to end up. Godcalls each of us to purify our lives of every sin while we are still alivehere on earth. Indeed, we are called not only to purify our lives of everysin, but to purify the universe of every consequence of every sin we mayhave committed. Make no mistake about it: every sin carries a consequence, not just aspiritual consequence, but a material consequence. When you or I sin, weremove grace from our lives. Grace is power. It is the ability to live lifein peace and joy. When we remove this power, we are unable to live lifepeacefully or with joy. So, no matter how secret my sin may be, because itremoves from me the power to be peaceful and joyful, I will be renderedunhappy by my sin. Because I lack the grace of joy, I will inevitably lashout at you, with unhappy word or fist as a direct consequence of myoh-so-secret sin. Because I am not at peace, you are tempted to relinquishyour peace. If you do, you will pass the pain along to the people you meet. The effects of my secret, solitary stone-hearted sin ripple inexorably outinto the world, tearing apart more and more lives. There is good news. When I go to Confession, my sins are forgiven and thegrace, the power, to be joyful and at peace is restored to me, if I chooseto accept it. There is bad news. Even though I am restored to peace, the effects of myearlier sins are still rippling through the world. There is astonishing news. God expects me to purify the world of theserippling consequences. He gives me the grace to do it through the works ofindulgences. section39955The Season of GraceAn indulgence is the flood of grace brought into the world through myobedience to Christ and His Bride. It is a somewhat arbitrary obedience thatanswers for my earlier arbitrary disobedience. God does not owe me thisgrace, He gives it to me freely, for He knows I cannot clean up the mess Imade unless I receive this assistance. The flood of grace from my repeatedobediences slows or removes the negative consequences of my pastdisobediences. Paul tells us that we are God's co-workers (1 Cor 3:9). God's work is thetotal eradication of sin and all its consequence. Thus, our work is likewisethe total eradication of sin and all its consequences. He expects each of usto do our part. Every living man must clean up his own mess. I can only win the flood ofgrace, the indulgence, if I am first in a state of grace: my sins must firstbe forgiven in confession. I can only win the flood of grace for myself, orfor those who can no longer obey in the flesh because they no longer havetheir flesh with them. That is, I can assist those who cannot easily helpthemselves - the dead. Some people die in a state of grace, but have not finished cleaning up theirmess. There is only one way to cleanse the world: join in Christ'ssuffering. But Christ suffered in His own body. When I am dead, I do nothave a body until the Last Day. Because of this crippling lack, my spiritualsuffering must do double-duty, for the part of me which is supposed to dothe work of suffering, that is, my flesh, is not present to help out. Thisdouble-duty suffering is Purgatory. When I, as a living man, offer indulgences for the dead, I acknowledge that1 Corinthians 12 is correct: when one suffers, all share the pain. But, whenmy assistance has helped a soul complete the necessary purification, 1Corinthians 12 still applies: when one is honored, all share the glory. In Luther's time, All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day were the pre-eminentdays for Catholics to remember and apply 1 Corinthians 12. On those days,Catholics flocked to perform indulgences, for they wanted to purify theworld of the consequences of sin, they wanted to purify themselves, theywanted to help those who had died finish their purifications. The weeks between All Hallow's Eve and the First Sunday of Adventcorresponded to the end of the ages. In a few short weeks, the new age wouldbe upon them! In this new age, Christmas-Parousia would be celebrated.Everyone had to prepare, all had to sweep their house clean of leaven, thatis, the consequences of sin, and ready themselves for the heavenly banquet,to feast on the pure flesh of God.Luther's badly-formed theology had no place for meaningful human sufferingor men as divine co-workers. Thus, he rejected both indulgences andpurgatory. So, he attacked indulgences at the crucial moment - the momentduring the year when men began to prepare themselves to consciously live asdivine co-workers.His attack on Catholic theology may have begun with indulgences, but itended by destroying the common understanding that God empowers man tosanctify even time itself. Today, what Luther began on Halloween has reachedfull crescendo. He did attack it at the crucial moment, for the word"crucial" comes from the Latin "crux", which means Cross. By nailing hisattack on indulgences on that door, he crucified the idea that men shouldshare Christ's sufferings. Now, especially in America, Christ suffers alone.Do you want to change that?Take back the seasons. Here's one way to do it. The Calendar of Indulgences, created by<http://www.bridegroompress.com> Bridegroom Press, is a simple wall calendarthat lists every indulgence Christ offers us through His Bride, the Churchon a week-by-week basis. It explains what an indulgence is, how to do eachone, and gives you an opportunity to consider each in turn over the courseof the year, so that you can choose the ones which best suits your spiritualneeds in each liturgical season. Historical notes are arrangedchronologically throughout the months, showing how the doctrine ofindulgences developed from apostolic times onward, while weekly and biweeklyreminders to fast and receive Confession help you order your spiritual life. Each month also shows how to Scripturally defend a different doctrine of theChurch. Use the wall calendar to note regular activities, use it as youwould any other calendar, and slowly allow yourself to be caught up in theprayerful rhythms of the liturgical year.God gave us the liturgy so that we could learn to change our lives. We haveto find some way to allow the liturgical year into our lives. Thisliturgical year, make a resolution to let Him change you.Copyright 2003, all rights reserved, Steve KellmeyerSteve Kellmeyer is a nationally known author and lecturer, specializing inapologetics and catechetics. Fr Euteneuer and the Elections

Elections and Answers First: Elections Conservative and values voters were stung on Tuesday, and as far as I am concerned we deserved it. I am not dispirited about the elections or pessimistic about the future though. My reaction to the whole mess was quite beyond all that. The infamous 2006 mid-term elections will have taught us a lesson that we should already know: namely, that politics will never be a solution to our spiritual problems. This election was an "all about me" election in a sense. Voters in all key referendum states roundly blew off the key values issues in favor of the heartless alternatives. Parental involvement, an abortion ban, a cloning amendment and even the imminent prosecution of a Planned Parenthood criminal operation were all pretty much flatly rejected. Did the voters not see the basic concepts of right and wrong in these issues? Please. They just didn't care; or they didn't care enough to make a change. It comes down to that. Change is hard. Compromise with objective evil is easier. I think the Muslims call it "submission." It's not time to blame the Republicans for bad strategy or lousy candidates. It's not their fault - it is ours. We let it happen because as a culture we are just wholly selfish. When elections come down to "me" and my comfort zone then we get what we got: junk. The only successful moral issues that won the day were the marriage amendments in seven states. Why? Because "it's all about me." Dead babies thrown down incinerators don't move anyone out of their comfort zones. Cloning, isn't that supposed to help people? Planned Parenthood is just providing services to women, right? These are the positions of people in huge comfort zones. But most people can't stomach the idea that homosexuals will be living next to them in a pseudo-marriage state and showing up at their parties pretending that their state is normal. What will the kids say? Deep in the human heart people not only know homosexual activity is wrong, but they still have a visceral reaction to the idea that they want to call it marriage. Politics is a necessary evil, only a game of compromise. The culture will not change when our politicians change. It's the other way around. Politicians will change when our culture changes. And our culture will change when our hearts change. Pure and simple. I don't know about you, but I am spending the next two years praying for a full conversion of American culture - before Hillary comes down the pike to destroy everything. Now: Answers I am extremely grateful for all of the questions that came in response to my "Know Your Faith" email of several weeks ago. Actually I am overwhelmed by the response! You will notice that there are a few new sidebar items which are dedicated to the Q&A format. You can now submit a question through clicking on the side bar link. You can also access an archive of answers to the many questions I have already answered for the faithful. More than sixty good questions came in from that request, and I must be honest that I have not been able to answer all of them yet. Many of them need a bit of research to give a fair answer. I have, however, organized the questions into categories which will be updated regularly as I answer new questions. Be patient with me, and I will have them all done by Thanksgiving. Keep those questions coming! In this first Q&A installment you will find answers to questions that came in from our readers about the following subjects: Angels and Demons, Bishops and Priests, Catholic Colleges and Universities, Fallen Away Catholics and Mary. Make sure you see "Fr. Euteneuer's Three-Point Survey for Screening New Bishops" under the Bishops and Priests section - you will like it! My prayer is that you will be enlightened by the wisdom of the Church, and as you read, please pray for me and the resurgence of the Church Militant. Sincerely Yours in Christ, Rev. Thomas J. Bolton may not be Confirmed

WASHINGTON - John Bolton's prospects for staying on as U.N. ambassador essentially died Thursday as Democrats and a pivotal Republican said they would continue to oppose his nomination.

It was another blow to
President Bush, two days after Democrats triumphed in elections that will give them control of Congress next year. On Wednesday, Bush had announced that Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, a polarizing figure and face of the
Iraq' Iraq war, would step down.
On Thursday, the White House resubmitted Bolton's nomination to the Senate, where the appointment has languished for more than a year. Bush appointed him to the job temporarily in August 2005 while Congress was in recess, an appointment that will expire when the Congress adjourns, no later than January.
Sen. Lincoln Chafee (news, bio, voting record), R-R.I., who was defeated by Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse on Tuesday, told reporters in Rhode Island that he would continue opposing Bolton. That would likely deny Republicans the votes needed to move Bolton's nomination from the
Senate Foreign Relations Committee' name=c1> SEARCHNews News Photos Images Web' name=c3> Senate Foreign Relations Committee to the full Senate.
"The American people have spoken out against the president's agenda on a number of fronts, and presumably one of those is on foreign policy," Chafee said. "And at this late stage in my term, I'm not going to endorse something the American people have spoke out against."
Democrats indicated that even should the Senate try debating Bolton's nomination when lawmakers reconvene next week — still under Republican control — they would stretch out debate on Bolton with the aim of killing it. Republicans lack the 60 votes needed to force a vote on the nomination.
"I see no point in considering Mr. Bolton's nomination again in the Foreign Relations Committee because, regardless of what happens there, he is unlikely to be considered by the full Senate," said Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware, top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee.
Bolton's 2005 recess appointment came after Democrats blocked repeated attempts by GOP leaders to grant him Senate confirmation. Democrats said Bolton was a bully who lacked the diplomatic skills necessary to broker international deals.
In 2005, Chafee wavered on his support for Bolton, citing concerns at one point about Bolton's tie to a government investigation into faulty prewar intelligence on Iraq. In September, Chafee — who was in a tight re-election race — said he would oppose Bolton's nomination until the administration answered questions about its policy in the Middle East, which in effect delayed any vote until after the elections.
Bush asked congressional Republicans Thursday morning at the White House to confirm Bolton during their "lame duck" session beginning next week, said White House spokesman Tony Snow.
Asked if Bush thinks Bolton will be confirmed, Snow said, "We'll find out."

, Pope SaysThursday, November 09, 2006 12:00:00 AM GMThttp://www.catholicexchange.com/e3news/index.asp?category_id=10Jesus Christ is the focal point in salvation history, and thus the critical point in dialogue with other faiths, Pope Benedict XVI said at his regular weekly public audience on November 8. Continuing his commentaries on the apostolic Church, with a further examination of the thought of St. Paul, the Pope told a crowd of 15,000 that after his famous conversion on the road to Damascus. St. Paul set Jesus as "the apex of the history of salvation and, hence, the true point of reference in dialogue with other religions." It is Christ, not the Law, who offers the hope of salvation, the Pope observed, following the teachings of St. Paul. And while an observant Jew can boast of his loyalty to the Law, no one can boast before the Cross of Christ. Yet St. Paul insists that Christian faith involves something more than loyalty to Christ, the Pope pointed out; the Apostle writes that we are "in Christ Jesus." The identity of the Christian believer is attributable "only on Him and to His grace." Following St. Paul, therefore, the Pope reminded his audience that we cannot allow anything to come between ourselves and Christ-- "No idol must be allowed to contaminate our spiritual universe.(This article courtesy of Catholic World News. That is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion.Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcuttahttp://www.catholic-pages.com/forum/topic.asp?topic_id=9802

Rick Santorum

PEGGY NOONAN
We Need His Kind In praise of Rick Santorum. Friday, November 3, 2006 12:01 a.m. EST
It has been hard not to experience the election as a brute-force clash between two armies struggling over terrain their soldiers have come to see, inevitably--they are at war, they are exhausted--as the location of the battle, but not its purpose. The nation is where the contest takes place; you can forget, in the fight, that its actual future is what's being fought for.
But here's an exception: the state of Pennsylvania, which has been this year a bright patch of meaning. Its U.S. Senate contest has been the great race of the cycle, the one about which conservatives in their hearts most care. And not only conservatives, but those who know, for whatever reason and in whatever way, that there is something truly at stake here, something beyond mere red team and blue.
That would be Sen. Rick Santorum. The sense among so many people--including politicians and journalists--is that the Senate needs his sort, his kind.
The other day I called a former senator, a crusty old moderate Republican, and asked him if he liked Mr. Santorum. "No," he said, "I love him." When Mr. Santorum was new to the Senate, in 1995, he, the elder, seasoned legislator tried to mentor him. He wanted to help him survive. Mr. Santorum was grateful and appreciative, "but he kept speaking his mind!" The former senator: "The political scientists all say to be honest and stand for principle, that's what people want. And he was exactly that, and he's about to get his head handed to him." He chuckled then with what seemed the reflexive pleasure of one pol about to see another take a tumble. Then he stopped. It was sad, he said.

Being a U.S. senator is a hard job. I mean this not sarcastically. John F. Kennedy once observed that it carries within it an always potentially conflicting dynamic. He was a senator from Massachusetts, he said, there to look after the needs and interests of his state. "Who will speak for Massachusetts if her own senators do not?" At the same time, look at his title: United States senator from Massachusetts. He was a member of a deliberative body whose duty it was to look, always, to the national interest. Senators could not only be "special pleaders" for "state or section." He was there, in the end, to speak for America, to address issues greater and higher than those of region, state and party.
Rick Santorum's career (two Senate terms, before that two in the House) suggests he has thought a great deal about the balance, and concluded that in our time the national is the local. Federal power is everywhere; so are the national media. (The biggest political change since JFK's day is something he, 50 years ago, noted: the increasing nationalization of everything.) And so he has spoken for, and stood for, the rights of the unborn, the needs of the poor, welfare reform when it was controversial, tax law to help the family; against forcing the nation to accept a redefining of marriage it does not desire, for religious freedom here and abroad, for the helpless in Africa and elsewhere. It is all, in its way, so personal. And so national. He has breached the gap with private action: He not only talks about reform of federal law toward the disadvantaged, he hires people in trouble and trains them in his offices.
Santorum issues are hot issues, and raise passions pro and con.
His style has been to face what his colleagues hope to finesse. His opponent, reading the lay of the land, has decided the best way to win is to disappear. He does not like to debate. Mr. Santorum has taken to carrying an empty chair and merrily addressing it.
Mr. Santorum has been at odds with the modernist impulse, or liberalism, or whatever it now and fairly should be called. Most of his own impulses--protect the unprotected, help the helpless, respect the common man--have not been conservative in the way conservative is roughly understood, or portrayed, in the national imagination. If this were the JFK era, his politics would not be called "right wing" but "progressive." He is, at heart, a Catholic social reformer. Bobby Kennedy would have loved him.
This week I caught up with Mr. Santorum by phone as his van drove east along the Pennsylvania Turnpike toward Philadelphia.
He sounded joyful. He said this campaign was "the hardest and most wonderful ordeal I've ever been through." He said he's been taken aback by all the prayers, by all the people who've come from so far to help him. "I've never had that before. I've never had it. I met a guy from Seattle, and a guy from Waco, Texas--they came in for a week just to help me. We have 14 kids coming in from Great Britain!" He said, "Wonderful things are happening."
He sounded startled. And moved. And hopeful. Which is a funny way for a guy down 10 points to feel.
He told me something is happening. And I hope he's right. Because the U.S. Senate is both an institution and a collection of human beings, and it needs his kind.

I end with a story too corny to be true, but it's true. A month ago Mr. Santorum and his wife were in the car driving to Washington for the debate with his opponent on "Meet the Press." Their conversation turned to how brutal the campaign was, how hurt they'd both felt at all the attacks. Karen Santorum said it must be the same for Bob Casey and his family; they must be suffering. Rick Santorum said yes, it's hard for them too. Then he said, "Let's say a Rosary for them." So they prayed for the Caseys as they hurtled south.
A friend of mine called them while they were praying. She told me about it later, but didn't want it repeated. "No one would believe it," she said.
But I asked Mr. Santorum about it. Sure, he said, surprised at my surprise. "We pray for the Caseys every night. We know it's as hard for them as it is for us."
Personally I'll shed no tear for the careerists of either party who win or lose, nor for the BlackBerryed gargoyles in the second row of the SUV who tell them how to think and where to stand. That means this election night will be, for me, a dry-eyed affair.
But if Rick Santorum goes down to the defeat all expect, I will feel it. Like the crusty old moderate Republican, I know a national loss when I see one.
