I spoke with Msgr. Parry this week about trying to get some more adult religious education opportunites established at Sacred Heart. He said you had e-mailed him just recently and that you were interested in the something similar. He asked me to contact you and gave me your e-mail. I have several ideas that Msgr,. Parry wants me to follow-up on. We hope to have a program or two established by the fall, and are just getting some very preliminary work started.

We did not list Scripture as a particular topic, however, because we do already have something like that in place (. . .although there is always room for more !!!)
Every Lent, Msgr. Parry does a "Soup and Scripture" Study one a week that is really good! Also, during the school year a group meets at a parishioner's house during the day and they study one book of scripture at a time. I do not know what they will be studying next. Call the rectory office, 301-262-0704, and they can give you the contact person's information so you can find out more details if you want).
I asked Msgr. Parry for some suggestions to get me started, then researched a little more, then brought the ideas back to him. The three he liked best were "Why Catholic" (see whycatholic.org), a study of the new adult Catechism, and some books that we can get on various topics from Loyola Books (Loyolabooks.org). He prefers a program that meets 6-8 sessions.
He asked me to call some of the women who left their name and number on the surveys and see what/when people were interested in.
Do you have any interest in these topics or helping make some calls?
Incidentally, if you are really, really interested in Catholic Scripture Study. A few friends of mine in the Severna Park Annapolis area are involved in a fairly in depth study. If you want more info, let me know!

Yes, Fr Parry was a little bit skeptical about Renew as well; they only recently have taken the "Why Catholic" group under their website and I am not sure of their exact affiliation with WhyCatholic.
The Archdiocese of Washington (and Baltimore, for that matter) has used WhyCatholic in the past and it is very solid.
Mostly what I am hoping to provide is more general info, intro/whet your appetite sessions. It sounds like you are looking for something deeper. I am not sure we have enough interest for that. . .yet.
There is a book club that meets (?)monthly that you might be interested in. I think they did a CS Lewis book recently and are doing Pope Benedict XVI's "Jesus of Nazareth" right now.
I believe there is also a group that is going to meet to discuss the Theology of the Body. That will probably go a bit deeper!!!!

I don't think we would set it up as a discussion group as much as a teaching/learning, although obviously things would be "discussed." We would preface the whole thing by saying the teachings of the Church are as written; if you have a disagreement, you need to take that up with a proest or more learned catechist. We would be more likely to "discuss" how the teachings affect our lives, how we can live them out. . .

Which types were you thinking about?
We just transferred from Our Lady of the Fields. I was trying to implement an adult scripture study. The one priest was interested in starting with the Acts--but that has been dragging on for over a year to get that started. Along with Acts--learning more on the early Christians of the Church as well.
Just know there is tons of info out there which I think many Catholics are missing and all great stuff.

They had Renew's Why Catholic at my last parish but I heard some conflicting things about the group: Renew? Plus, a little skeptic about a lay group teaching catechism to a group supposedly whom are lapsed or were never taught some of the basic Church catechism.
Also, looking personally for more deeper understanding of the Church. I see a lot of basic teachings and catechisms. I enjoy watching or as now listening to EWTN on the radio and learning especially from Fr Groeschel or Fr Corapi.
What about something on some of the great books of the Church: Intro to Devout Life; Spiritual exercises; Mere Christianity; etc.

Why Catholic: The content looks good, but is the Church's teachings up for discussion? It is black and white/ not a democracy. I wonder about groups not being properly led or perhaps mislead. Of course, anything getting people to think about their religion is great and surely we can always learn more. I bought a copy of 'Catholic for Dummies' and I think I pick up that as much as I do with the CCC.
Plus, heard some not good things about RENEW.
You gave some good info. I am looking for a good scripture study and like to get into an equally good book study--seems like there are some very good ones around.
