Lauth's 50th Anniversary

Hi--

As you know Mom and Dad's 50th anniversary is next June. Anyone have any ideas of what to do? I was thinking about talking to them about what they would like to do. The surprise thing never works any way. My guess is Dad probably really doesn't want anything but Mom would probably like something. Several members of the extended Lauth family asked about what we were going to do at Therese's wedding. I'd be happy to talk to them about it but am equally happy to let one of you do it also. Let me know what you think.

i think you should do a surprise--I dont think they would suspect it. Your mom might but not your dad. Do something, even if on cheesy side. Boat-party, etc.

Max said he doesnt want a birthday party--just the cash? But i think he should have one--good for him. So, I asked a social friend (girl) to organize some people for thursday after school. I doubt it wouldnt be leaked to Max. So, we'll see

Tracy--love, love, love the video scrapbook idea. that's awesome!!!! and i'll definitely send you some photos and stuff. i can also borrow their wedding album and gerry can scan some of those photos. we'll also check out, per jimmy's suggestion, the best man/maid of honor. i think it was sonny and ann??

and maybe that's the best way to proceed--to tell them about the event but then include some neat surprises like the dvd that they would in no way be expecting. if we end up having the event at knights of columbus, it would probably be hard to keep that secret. dad knows all those guys and they chat like little girls, so i'm sure it would get back to him that something was on the calendar for him. the next time gerry and I are up at the hall, we'll ask about cost and catering, etc.
patty--the hotel is a good idea. i'm thinking put that on back burner for now until we see what the event ends up costing us. gerry and i just looked at some hotels in annap for our anniversary, and anything nice was running $300++ a night!!

Sounds like you have the planning underway and under control. I agree that this might be a difficult to pull off as a surprise. But go for it. We defer to your judgment as you will be doing most if not all of the work.

I would like to offer another idea that could be “The” surprise or an additional part of the entire surprise package. I would love to produce a DVD movie covering their fifty years together. I do them for our church all the time. It would include photos going back to the time when they were dating, their wedding, kids, grandkids, family, dogs, house, Christmas’ past, crazy moments, graduations, you name it - the whole enchilada! I have all kinds of special effects to choose from and I can add music and sound bites. Sharon, you could assist with scripting. You are so great at that and I can put together the media. The entire family - near and far - could send their photos and special moments and I will put it together. You can play it at the celebration and then give a copy to everyone as a DVD scrapbook and diary of Jim and Mary.

What do you think?

I found one thing on the mansion website that might not work out: "The Belair Mansion is closed for all rentals on Saturdays and Sundays until 3 p.m"- Don't know what everyone else was thinking but starting that late might not be best- then we're in for serving a full dinner I would think. I was thinking that maybe starting earlier and maybe doing more of a late lunch thing might work best plus if we start too late we're cutting into Dad's nap time. I'm thinking KofC might be the easiest and least expensive. I'm thinking the main focus should be on trying to get all the right folks there- anybody know who all the groomsman and bridesmaids were?
I'd stick to something in the Bowie area which will be relatively convenient for most. The eastern shore, though nice, might be a little inconvenient for many especially since beach traffic will have started plus wouldn't want to send a bunch of intoxicated folks out on the road afterwards (you know those Lauths).
Another option, that Dad might like, would be to do it at Bowie Golf course, but maybe not.
And let's not forget to invite the Bettge clan as well.

i called belair mansion. sounds great, but pricey as i suspected. it's $900 for the room rental for 6 hours--2 of that is for caterer set up and clean up, so your event is 4 hours. you get the double parlor and the sunroom--very very pretty. tables and chairs are provided. you have to use one of their approved caterers who are licensed and insured, and they bring the food, alcohol, linens, and china. it's available the weekend of june 8. max occupancy is 75. plenty of parking and certainly has the family history to go with it. if you want to look at it to remind yourself how nicely the mansion's been fixed up, go to www.cityofbowie.org and click on museums.

another option, not nearly as fancy, but would fit the bill, is the knights of columbus hall in bowie. dad and gerry are both members so we'd get it for very cheap. if not free. could use the side small banquet room and the attached bar and game room. plenty of space, very casual. believe it or not, their food is pretty good, and alcohol is priced very well. think you can bring in your own food as well.

i'm on a roll. another option is a restaurant on the eastern shore. one is kentmorr. it's beautiful. right on the water. about 10 minutes over the bridge in stevensville. could probably rent a room/part of dining room. you can wander around outside/have tent outside. there's even volleyball net on the beach and they make their own ice cream. again, might be expensive b/c it's seafood.

a few things to consider.
